It’s the Journey, Not the Destination
Just Say No!
By far, the question that I am most often asked about sea glass is:
“Why don’t you just use a rock tumbler?”
Now, don’t get me wrong, rock tumblers certainly have their place.
Chief among them, they make a huge racket. And did you know that this huge racket must continue for 27 days in order for the tumbling to take place? True.
Because of that, I’ve given several rock tumblers as gifts to the children of family and friends. Yes, I’m that kind of person.
But when it comes to sea glass, a true sea glass enthusiast is more interested in the journey, not the destination.
There are a couple of reasons:
There’s an appeal, romance, mystery and intrigue associated with collecting and wearing nature’s gems – authentic sea glass!
The glass holds such secrets to its past! What were its origins? Who were the people who originally used this glass, maybe a century ago, and what would they think if they knew that the glass was now being enjoyed by a future generation?
And of course, nothing can compare to the value of the hunt itself.
According to Richard LaMotte, author of “Pure Sea Glass: Discovering Nature’s Vanishing Gems”:
There are scores of collectors who simply enjoy the pleasure of spending time along the shore and absorbing the natural benefits from being outdoors. There is great healing power found where water meets the shore. The rhythmic surf can soften our rough edges as well.
You can’t get that from a rock tumbler!
