Searching for Sea Glass…the Best Conditions
Here are a few tips to make your sea glass search pay off, including resources such as links to tide time tables and even to the phases of the moon!
-
Location, Location, Location
First, it helps to know a little bit about the local history. Choose a location that has had a lot of boat traffic and/or shipping traffic over the years, as for example, the Chesapeake Bay. A nice sandy and/or rocky beach is your best bet.
By far one of the most important conditions to consider during your search is the tide. Aim for low tide, or at least plan to get there as the tide is going out. Sea glass is light and floats with the tide, so an outgoing tide is losing its strength and leaves these little gems behind. A net is a great tool to have to scoop up the glass that may be churning at the point where the waves hit the shore. But be sure to check previous high tide lines, too.
Here are a couple of handy links to check the tide time tables. If you don’t find your location at these sites, try your local weather website.

The Moon
If you want to really get into this and choose the best time to collect sea glass, pay attention to the phases of the moon because that affects the tides. During a full or new moon, the tides recede more than on the quarter moons.
-
Storms
Check for sea glass either during or after storms to see what has been churned up! One of the cool things about collecting sea glass is that storms produce a lot of glass! So while you may be disappointed with the lack of sun on your beach vacation, don’t despair! The sea glass hunting will be good!

Thanks so much for your info on searching for beach glass, how generous of you to share that info. A lot of people are very mum when it comes to it. My husband and I just started hunting it in OBX and live in AAco MD and are excited to look a little in our own state. Will be contacting you to make some jewelry out of some of our finds! Thanks again…sharing good info will come back to you 10 fold!
